framing + delivery

Framing

All orders are framed free of charge on purchase and this process takes approximately three days. Eight coats of genuine gesso are applied to a wooden blank, after corners have been silked in the traditional manner. Subsequently, four coats of casein paint are applied by brush to achieve a matte, yet lustrous finish. Sides and outer edges are then hand burnished with a cotton pad for protection. The whole process creates an effect of great beauty and subtlety that harmonises with the textural low sheen of the paintings. Care must be taken with the result, it is advisable to use cotton gloves or dusters when hanging, as the new surface can take a damp mark in overly testing conditions. Casein hardens considerably over about six months, please avoid the front wide flat section of the frame before it’s fully cured. If there are any problems, works can be returned and refinished with exactly the same technology and colour for a nominal charge. If a more rugged surface is required this can be supplied using modern paint in the same hue. Please contact us via the ‘enquiries’ form to specify this option.
